DAYTON, Ohio — Health officials in Dayton and Montgomery County are warning of a resurgence of carfentanil in illegal drugs ahead of National Naloxone Day on Friday.
According to Public Health Dayton & Montgomery County, carfentanil is an lethal substance that is commonly used as an elephant tranquilizer.

“The presence of carfentanil is of concern because it lessens the ability of Narcan to reverse the effects of an overdose,” said Dr. Kent Harshbarger, Montgomery County coroner. “This underscores the extreme danger of using drugs purchased off the street.”
Throughout the first half of the year, there has been an increase in carfentanil in overdose deaths within the county.
Officials said having Narcan available can help reduce accidental overdose deaths from opioids, but that other harm reduction strategies should be taken.
The Community Overdose Action Team has the following safety recommendations for those using drugs:

- Do not use drugs alone.
