BRATENAHL, Ohio — Another Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) crew has been struck by a vehicle overnight, this time on I-90 in Bratenahl.

What You Need To Know

  • Another ODOT crew was struck by a vehicle overnight
  • One ODOT worker was taken to the hospital and released after suffering non-life-threatening injuries
  • This brings the total up to 71 for this year

  • At this time last year we were only at 48

This is the 71st instance this year of ODOT crews being struck, according to ODOT Press Secretary Matt Bruning, who also said he wishes he knew why there's been an increase of these situations.

At this point last year, the number was only at 48. By the end of 2024, there were 88 crews struck in total.

“I know the year started off with several more plows hit this year vs. last, but that’s due in part to the fact that the winter was more active so we were out more,” Bruning said via email.

This accident, involving a Truck Mounted Attenuator, occurred just a little after 12:15 a.m. Wednesday.

Amanda McFarland, the Northeast Ohio Public Information Officer for ODOT, said the crew had been performing litter pick-up operations on the highway near Eddy Road when they were hit by a vehicle that did not move over.

"One ODOT worker was transported to the hospital and has since been released," McFarland said via email. "They sustained minor non-life-threatening injuries."

If you see ODOT crews working on the road, remember to slow down and move over. Give them plenty of space. That also goes for any vehicle displaying flashing lights on the side of the road (police, emergency responders, utility crews, etc…)

It’s not just a suggestion, it’s also the law.
