The Hawaii Department of Transportation plans to reduce the speed limit on Mamalahoa Highway (Route 11) between Honaunau Elementary School Driveway and the vicinity of Captain Cook Village (mile posts 106.5 and 109) starting June 9.

The current speed limit is 45 mph; the new speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph. Before mile post 106.5, the speed limit is 35 mph and after mile post 109.5, the speed limit is 30 mph. The change will make it consistent with speeds throughout the corridor.

According to HDOT, there have been near misses and accidents and at least one death in the past five years along this stretch of highway where homes, schools and businesses are located.
