CLEARWATER, Fla. — Over the last few days residents have been let in to the evacuated South Beach III condominium in Clearwater to get some of their belongings.
What You Need To Know
- Residents of South Beach III in Clearwater were evacuated due to damage to a pillar
- Short, timed reentry windows allowed belongings retrieval
- Repairs are underway, but the cause and cost responsibilities remain unclear
Clara Spotnitz, who owns a condo, says residents also received a letter telling them that a long-term reentry plan was being worked out to get the 60 impacted residents back in their homes.
Spotnitz’s mother also lives at the condo full time, and she is happy they’ve been allowed to grab some items during 15-minute windows.
“Luckily, we were able to go back and get her CPAP machine and medication, because you know, she’s my mom,” Spotnitz said.
Only two people have been let in at a time, and engineers can ask them to leave if they have any concerns.
“It was timed. He even gave us a five-minute warning,” Spotnitz said.
Construction crews have been onsite all week working to stabilize the damaged pillar and, according to the condo association, they’re on schedule with repairs.
An August report from Karins Engineering found the foundation, overall structure, and concrete beams were in good condition.
A September inspection noted suggestions for structural repairs, but said there were no issues that would compromise the building’s safety.
As far as what caused the damage to the pillar and who will be responsible for the cost of repairing it have not been made clear yet, leading to additional frustration for some owners.
“We don’t know the legalities of how everything is going to play out and the extensive damage – how much additional damage was caused by this incident,” Spotnitz said. “Obviously, this is stressful for (my mom), and she’s stressed for me as far as being the owner, the homeowner.... It’s just very frustrating.”
