The city recorded a 3% drop in overall crime last month, driven by a decline in robberies, burglaries and grand larcenies, NYPD statistics released Wednesday show.
The dip marked the seventh month in a row that police saw a drop in crime year over year, the agency said.
The NYPD logged 1,170 robberies in April, down 13.5% from the 1,352 that were logged in April 2024, NYPD data shows. Burglaries were down 9.6% year over year, from 1,055 in April 2024 to 954 last month, the department said.
Grand larcenies, meanwhile, dropped 4% year over year, from 3,881 to 3,726 last month, the NYPD added.
Murders, however, were up by 12% last month, with 28 homicides logged compared to 25 in April 2024, according to police.
Reported rape saw an increase of 30%, with 169 incidents reported last month compared to 130 in April 2024. The NYPD attributed the increase to a new state law that broadened the definition of rape to include more forms of sexual assault.
The city also saw a 1.5% uptick in felony assaults — from 2,374 in April 2024 to 2,410 last month — and a 5% increase in grand larcenies auto, from 1,137 in April of last year to 1,194 last month.
Shootings incidents in the city increased by 21.7% year over year, from 60 recorded in April 2024 to 73 recorded last month, the NYPD said.
Transit crime also increased, with 152 incidents reported last month compared to 141 in April of last year, marking a 7.8% jump.
In a statement, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the agency plans to roll out its “summer violence plan” next week as it continues to work to combat crime.
“Crime is down for the seventh month in a row, and that’s the direct result of the strategies we’ve put in place and the tireless work of the men and women of the NYPD,” Tisch said. “But even with that progress, we aren’t satisfied — there is always more we can do to reduce crime and ensure that New Yorkers feel safe.”
