RALEIGH, N.C. — Students and public employees across North Carolina can now breathe a little easier when it comes to voting.

The State Board of Elections just approved nearly 100 types of student and employee ID cards that can be used to vote in the 2025 and 2026 elections, according to their statement.

That means if you’re a student at any UNC System school — or several other colleges and universities — you can use your school ID to vote. The same goes for many public employees, including those who work for local governments, charter schools and other educational institutions.

The newly approved IDs are in addition to the types of identification already permitted by state law for use by voters, the NCSBE said.

Each ID on the list includes a photo, which is key for verifying your identity when you check in to vote. If your school or employer isn’t listed yet, don’t worry, there may be more chances to get approved for the 2026 elections.

As long as the IDs are valid and unexpired, election officials said the IDs will be valid for voting through Dec. 31, 2026.

This move is part of North Carolina’s ongoing effort to make voting secure while keeping it accessible for students and public workers.
