  • Power has been restored for a majority of customers in Central Mass after downed trees hit several power lines

  • Slushy roads from Sunday's winter storm also froze over amid dropping temperatures

  • Travel may still be difficult over the coming days, particularly on rural streets

  • Crews also worked overnight to fix a water main break in Spencer

More than 1,000 customers in the area had lost power as trees coated with a thick layer of ice toppled under the weight. In addition, the slushy conditions leftover from Sunday’s snow and rain froze overnight amid dropping temperatures, making for a difficult cleanup on the roads.

At Klem’s, a Spencer hardware store, owner Jessica Bettencourt said ice melt has been a hot commodity - and restocking hasn’t been easy.

“I think it’s just everybody trying to get it at once, and you’re coming off of two years where there wasn’t really a lot of demand,” Bettencourt said. “We had really light winters, so I think in a lot of cases that means the manufacturers pull back a little bit and there just isn’t as much in the pipeline when all of a sudden everyone needs it.”

As crews worked to restore power, the Spencer Police Department said they were also working overnight to fix a water main break on Main Street.

Bettencourt, like many residents in the area, has also been chipping away at the ice coating roads, sidewalks, driveways, street signs and power lines.

“This morning, my sliding glass door was frozen shut, my garage door was frozen shut, so we had to get creative to break out my car from the garage,” Bettencourt said. “Branches are just down everywhere.”

Spencer Police warn with temperatures not expected to rise in the near future, road conditions may still be dangerous for some time.
