Winter weather alerts

Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect across parts of South Carolina. Alerts will remain in effect until noon Wednesday.

Forecast

Snow moves into the southern end of the state beginning Tuesday afternoon. It will spread across the state through evening, lasting until early Wednesday morning.

Mixed precipitation is also expected with more sleet along the lower South Carolina coastal counties, especially inland of US 17.

Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, will become slick and hazardous for travel. It's best to stay home and indoors if possible, but if you have to drive, plan on a slippery Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commute.

Snow and sleet totals will climb up to 1 to 2 inches acrosst the Midlands. Toward the coast, there is potential for higher totals. Some areas could see up to 3 to 6 inches of snow.

Bitter cold conditions are also expected Tuesday with near-record low temperatures Wednesday night. That means any wintry precipitation should stick to the ground. Roads could refreeze Wednesday night.

Be sure to prepare for the dangerous cold and keep your pets indoors this week.
