SOUTH CAROLINA - Memorial Day weekend is here and that means the start of the summer travel season. While people driving will have their own set of circumstances to deal with, air travelers need to take their own precautions. On Thursday morning, Spectrum News spoke with a representative from Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport.
Among the typical advice of arriving early on busy weekends like this, travelers also need to make sure they are properly prepared when it comes to identification.
“Currently, those who do not have a Real I-D or an acceptable form of identification to get through T-S-A are subject to extra screening." Said Kimberly Albizar with the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport. "So I advise anyone who doesn’t have their Real ID to go ahead and look into that process, make sure they have any other acceptable form of identification or allow for extra time for that additional screening.”
The Real ID requirement went into effect earlier this month. Albizar was unable to say if a lack of a Real ID will eventually lead to being denied from boarding a flight. As for now though, if you do not have a federally approved ID or another accepted form of identification, plan to spend more time dealing with security.
Below is a list of the accepted forms of identification for domestic flights:
- REAL ID-compliant driver's licenses or other state photo identity cards issued by Department of Motor Vehicles (or equivalent)
- If you are not sure if your ID complies with REAL ID, check with your state department of motor vehicles.
- A temporary driver’s license is not an acceptable form of identification.
