SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Spartanburg County students will receive much needed financial assistance for continuing their education after high school thanks to a new area partnership.

Philanthropists Susu and George Dean Johnson made a 40-million dollar committment to the Meeting Street Scholarship Fund. This will allow eligible students from Spartanburg for five graduation classes to receive 40-thousand dollars to cover room and board in their higher education pursuits.

“Spartanburg is our home, and we are thrilled to support the Meeting Street Scholarship Fund’s expansion here,” said the Johnsons. “Education has the power to change lives, and this Scholarship will open doors for talented and deserving students across the county. An investment in education is an investment in our collective future, and it will strengthen the fabric of our community, state and country.”

A couple hundred students and teachers from the area were on hand at a special celebration announcement Thursday. Scholarship applications will begin to be accepted on January 6.
