SAN ANTONIO -- Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar and his Command Staff are moving forward with the Body Worn Camera Project, announced Wednesday morning.

  • Will negotiate terms with Axon
  • Chosen from 6 leading vendors
  • SAPD uses the same vendor

The Bexar County Sheriff Office has selected Axon as it vendor. County Commissioners Court voted in favor of entering into negotiations with Axon to provide body-worn cameras for both the Law Enforcement and Detention Divisions.

Axon was chosen among other leading vendors invited to bid for a contract.

The BCSO field tested the top two competitors in both the Law Enforcement Division by Patrolmen, as well as in the Detention Center, by the Special Emergency Response Team for a 60-day period.

Ultimately, Salazar and his team selected the company Axon.

The sheriff’s office is one of the few agencies in the nation to equip deputies with body cameras, both on patrol and in the jail. Axon allows members of the community, who are involved in or witness an incident, to upload video evidence to an online portal, Axon Citizen. This evidence will allow BCSO investigators to use those videos during active investigations.

Several major law enforcement agencies currently use Axon Body Cameras, including the Los Angeles Police Department, London Metro Police Department, as well as the San Antonio Police Department.

When asked about entering into the negotiation phase with the Body Worn Camera Project, Sheriff Javier Salazar stated:

“As a career law enforcement officer and head of a major metropolitan law enforcement agency, I recognize the need to have top quality and user friendly equipment in the hands of my Deputies. Axon will allow us to do just that.”
