SAN ANTONIO - Former San Antonio Mayor and presidential candidate Julián Castro was back in the Alamo City Wednesday. 

  • Presidential candidate Julián Castro served honorary chair for Planned Parenthood
  • South Texas branch celebrating 80th year
  • Event anticipated to raise in excess of $500,000

He served as this year's honorary chair at Planned Parenthood South Texas annual luncheon.

"We're here today to support an organization that does such important work," Castro said during the luncheon remarks.

Planned Parenthood South Texas is celebrating its 80th year serving women, men, and teens in the southern part of the state and the Rio Grande Valley.

According to the organization, in 2018 more than 18,000 people came to centers in San Antonio, Harlingen, and Brownsville.

"For generations Planned Parenthood has been fundamental to ensuring that people can get good reproductive health care in our country. So I'm glad to see 1,200 people here today that are part of en effort in South Texas to support Planned Parenthood to ensure that everybody has good access to reproductive health care no matter what their means are," Castro said.

This event is expected to raise more than $500,000.
