SAN ANTONIO -- Several local community leaders will represent San Antonio at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women meeting in March.

  • Panel wit be held March 13 in New York

A moderator and three panelists will speak to women from around the world about serious issues in San Antonio and ways the city has successfully handled them.

Experts in refugees, family and domestic violence, and the local culture will discuss crises women face in San Antonio.

There are female refugees who have no education or job opportunities and cannot speak English, or don’t understand short term solutions are not enough to combat domestic violence.

"I am very invigorated by the idea that I will be raising the voices of those that are not speaking for themselves because they find themselves in these awful situations." CEO of Family Violence Prevention Services Marta Pelaez said.

The women will present their panel on March 13 in New York.

"I think it is very important for everyone outside of San Antonio to know what we are doing in San Antonio." UIW History Department Chair and Professor Dr. Lopita Nath said.
