Westside residents and commuters in Spencerport are going to have to make some major adjustments in the travel plans if they use their RT 259 (Union St) bridge over the canal.

Starting Tuesday, July 9, the bridge will be under construction and closed for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic until November 2020, likely after the next presidential election. Boating traffic along the canal will not be affected during the construction.

The state Department of Transportation is suggesting motorists use Route 104 (West Ridge Road), Route 261 (Manitou Road) and Route 31 as a detour. Pedestrians are encouraged to use the Martha Street Crossing and pedestrian access to the Erie Canal Trailway, which will be maintained throughout construction. Businesses and sidewalks leading up to the bridge are open throughout construction.

The work being done is to replace steel in the floor systems. The lifting mechanisms and control towers will also be upgraded, and the bridge railing will be improved.

“By maintaining and preserving this historically significant lift bridge, we will help provide continued safe access for residents and businesses in the village and minimize future disruptions to the traveling public," Jordan Guerrin with the DOT explained.

Community members and business owners are happy to see the necessary repair work done to preserve the iconic 105-year-old bridge, while others think the construction could be detrimental to their business.

“They’re talking about a year, year and a half to have this done,” Ross Gates, Galley Restaurant owner said. “Our business is slow in the winter anyway because when you’re a waterfront restaurant and the water goes away you lose your appeal. But it’s a slow winter season and if it’s compromised by this construction it could put us out of business.”

While a “Local Only” sign sits two blocks from the lift bridge, all businesses on Union Street remain open.
