Some families in Monroe County may be able to rest easier about their bills soon.

Congressman Joe Morelle announced Saturday that he'll be providing resources to reduce heating costs for the winter.

The funds are coming from the American Rescue Plan. The amount includes almost $536 million through the Home Energy Assistance Program, plus more than $340 million from the Department of Health and Human Services.

The HEAP program helped more than 70,000 people last year.

Morelle emphasized the wide net of people that could use the help.

“When we passed the American Rescue Plan earlier this year, we made an investment to ensure no one is forced to choose between heating their home and putting food on their table,” Morelle said in a statement. “With winter upon us, I am proud to be able to deliver relief to Monroe County families when they need it most by helping them save money on their heating bills. I encourage everyone who qualifies to take advantage of these additional funds in the HEAP program, and I’ll continue working every day in Congress to make investments like this that ease the burden on hardworking families in our community.”

Applications are now being accepted.

You can apply through the county's Department of Human Services, Lifespan or the Catholic Family Center.
