A proposition for a land purchase along Lake Ontario in the Town of Yates special election has failed.
On Thursday night, about 64% of ballots cast were against the planned expansion of Yates Town Park.
A total of $700,000 in grant money would have helped purchase the adjacent land, which spans 153.3 acres next to the current 6-acre Town Park on Morrison Road.
Town officials say they respect the decision and will inform NYSEG that they no longer plan to buy the land.
Town Supervisor Jim Simon envisioned a nature trail for the property, and keeping the site mostly wild. (Spectrum News 1)
