The process continued into 2018, when the board voted they would change the names of five schools.

The district proposal includes changing the names of the following schools:

• The Allan facility (former Allan Elementary), named for John T. Allan, an officer in the Confederate Army
• Fulmore Middle School, named for Zachary Taylor Fulmore, a private in the Confederate Army
• Lanier High School, named for Sidney Lanier, a noted poet who fought for the Confederacy
• Reagan High School, named for John H. Reagan, the Confederacy’s postmaster general
• Eastside Memorial High School at the Johnston campus, named for Confederate Gen. Albert S. Johnston. This campus asked for a delay in their name change until renovations at the school are completed.

After the initial vote in February, the board asked for the public's help in deciding new names for the buildings. They also created a task force in April made up of community members, staff, and parents to help with the renaming process.

Each school then held committee meetings in September to get input and provide recommendations for the board.

Results from the committees:

  • The Allan Facility submitted Anita Coy as their proposed namesake. Coy was a former principal before becoming superintendent. She served the AISD community for over 20 years.
  • The Fulmore committee suggested renaming the school Lively Middle School, named after a 20-year teacher. The committee noted her dedication to the school and students. They also recommended Moon Tower Middle School and South Congress Middle School as their second and third choices.
  • The Sidney Lanier committee recommended changing the school name to North Central Early College High School after the location. Their second choice is. Diana H. Castañeda Early College High School, who was an activist and former board member. Their last choice is dropping the name "Sidney."
  • The John Reagan High School committee made a similar recommendation as their first choice, sighting the community's pride beyond the name. They also suggestedBarack H. Obama Early College High School as their second choice. Their third choice is Northeast Early College High School.

The school board will meet Monday evening, but won't discuss the name changes until 10 p.m. They could on some of the recommendations provided by the school communities.
