ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. -- Hammocks Beach State Park is making improvements for the 2019 summer season.

  • Hurricane Florence damaged the ferry docks and eroded its beaches
  • While construction is underway in the water, the park is growing on land with new hiking trails that will be open this spring
  • The beach will not be accessible by ferry until the new docks are built, which is estimated to be in mid-July

Hurricane Florence damaged the ferry docks and eroded its beaches.

The 20-year-old docks were due for demolition, but park rangers say the storm sped up the process.

While construction is underway in the water, the park is growing on land with new hiking trails that will be open this spring.

On the beach, the erosion will be left as is.

“We’re letting Mother Nature do its thing,” said Park Ranger Renee Evans. “So with us being a state park, and it’s a protected beach,  we’re just going to let it do what it normally does over the year and just rebuild itself.”

The beach will not be accessible by ferry until the new docks are built, which is estimated to be in mid-July.

Camping is closed until further notice.

The park is still open to the public daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
