CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – A UNC graduate student who confessed to smearing paint and her blood on the Silent Sam statue has won her appeal.

  • Maya Little won her appeal Thursday.
  • Little argued that in an initial hearing, one of the panelists was not impartial.
  • Little was seen on video smearing blood and paint on the base of Silent Sam last April.

The University Hearings Panel voted to dismiss Maya Little’s case Thursday, saying her basic rights were violated in an initial honor court hearing.

Little’s team argued one of the panelists was not impartial, citing comments on social media supporting keeping the Confederate statue on campus.

The monument was torn down by protestors months later.
