Every cat’s tail is unique, however, every cat uses their tail in similar ways.
Your cat’s tail is an extension of their spine and is important in many ways: from providing balance to helping them stay warm. However, a cat who is born without a tail or one who loses their tail because of an accident will recover and adjust.
When you see your cat walking along narrow fences or high places, their tail is hard at work, acting as a counterbalance and help cats stay balanced and accurate when pouncing on prey.
Cats also use their tails as a means of communication. A tail that is straight up acts as a greeting, a curve at the tip can mean your cat is relaxed, while a puffed up tall tail is a sign of dominance or confrontation. Fast flicks can mean kitty is preparing to pounce.
Teach children to treat a tail as part of the entire animal. A cat’s tail is a very sensitive and an essential part of their body. Injury to your cat’s tail can sometimes lead to bigger health issues causing a variety of problems including mobility issues, incontinence or nerve damage.
If your cat’s tail is damaged its important that you take them to the vet for treatment. You want to be sure to prevent infection and further pain.
