The AKC’s non-sporting group is the most diverse of all the recognized groups and includes French Bulldogs and what we call “English” Bulldogs.
Despite their different appearance, French and English bulldogs have a linked history. Bulldogs are thought to originate on the British Isles and were at first aggressive fighting dogs used for Bull baiting. But when using dogs in this cruel sport was outlawed fans bred out the ferocious tendencies and bred in loyalty, playfulness and affection, creating a sturdy medium sized companion, 40-50 pounds, that prefers to hang out with their humans than chase bulls and bears.
In the 19th century, bulldog enthusiasts were attempting to create a smaller version of the favorite companions, these dogs eventually became known as the French bulldog, weighing in at around 30 pounds, and have all the personality of their larger cousins and are just as sturdy with a slightly smaller frame.
Both breeds are brachycephalic and prone to breathing issues, especially in warmer weather so keeping them cool is a priority. Their low maintenance coats should be brushed regularly to help control minimal shedding and cleaning around the folds around their eyes and snout is important as well. Many pet parents of these breeds wash their dog’s faces daily with a warm damp wash cloth, to help keep them clean. These breeds are also prone to joint issues and skin allergies so regular vet visits are important to help them live a long healthy life.
Just because they are cute doesn’t mean a bulldog or a French bulldog is right for you. Before you bring home any dog be sure their natural temperament fits your lifestyle and you have the time energy and resources to care for them properly.
