First recognized by the AKC in 1904 the Schipperke is alert, lively and curious, perfectly developed to serve as a ratter, watchdog and companion on ships, barges and in homes. Originating in Belgium they are thought of as a small Shepard and vermin catcher.

These little dogs love to have a job. During World War II the Belgian resistance allegedly used the Schipperke to run messages to hideouts right under the nose of the Nazi forces in occupied Belgium.

Their foxy face and double coat makes them not only adorable but great indoor outdoor companions. However, the Schipperke needs exercise, play time and if possible, a purpose.

If you enjoy long walks, agility and fetch a Schipperke is for you. This is not a breed for those who just want to relax and sit on the couch!

They should be brushed regularly and walked daily to be happy and healthy. Weighing in at under 15 pounds these fun little dogs can live well into their teens!

Remember never choose a breed based on looks and be sure you have the time energy and resources to care for them properly.
