“I've been in close calls myself, where people are just trying to get in last second,” she said, “Definitely, it's pretty dangerous.”

There’s a sign that informs right-lane drivers must turn right.

But the last-second merging still happens.

Orange County's chief traffic engineer reviewed the intersection and found the presence of a bike lane is creating an illusion of a third thru lane.

“Sometimes here, where there's the little lines that you shouldn't be in, they'll stop there and create like a third turning or a straight lane,” Morales said.

To address the issue, the county plans to enhance the presence of the bike lane, post a sign showing lane designation and construct raised pavement markers on the left side of the right-turn-only lane.

“Some people just don't see the sign, and they don't know they have to merge,” Morales said. “And then some people, which I think are the majority, are just impatient. They don't want to have to wait in this long line.”
