SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Zoo was voted second best zoo in Newsweek’s annual Readers’ Choice Awards.

The list included 10 zoos across the nation and was selected by a panel of travel experts and voted on by readers. In previous years, the San Antonio Zoo came in third in the Newsweek’s rankings.

Newsweek highlighted the zoo’s humble beginnings with a small collections of buffalos and bears into what is now thousands of animals in different global exhibits. The article also highlights the zoo’s beloved tours that give you after-hours access.

The Houston Zoo, located in Houston, Texas, also made the list coming in at No. 9.

The San Antonio Zoo will premiere Big Bug on Saturday, an exhibit that showcases animatronic insects, including a ladybug, mosquito, spider, caterpillar, snail, beetle, butterfly, dragonfly and a bee, according to the zoo’s website.

And starting June 1, the zoo will have deals and specials for Teacher’s Appreciation Month.
