ORLANDO, Fla. — The Orlando Magic and Atlanta Hawks will meet for the fifth time this season and the fourth time in 15 days Tuesday, but this NBA Play-in Tournament game has the biggest stakes.

The winner between Orlando (41-41 in the regular season), seeded No. 7 heading into the postseason, and Atlanta (40-42), currently seeded No. 8, will advance into the NBA Eastern Conference playoffs as the seventh seed. The loser will have to compete in another Play-in game on Friday against the winner of the Play-in game between the ninth-seeded Chicago Bulls and 10th-seeded Miami Heat. The winner of Friday's game earns the eighth seeding in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

What You Need To Know

  • The Orlando Magic and Atlanta Hawks open Play-in Tournament action Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.

  • The winner will earn the No. 7 seeding in the NBA Eastern Conference playoffs

  • The loser will play again Friday against the winner of the Bulls-Heat Play-in game for the No. 8 seeding

  • Atlanta and Orlando split their regular-season series 2-2

The Magic and Hawks split their regular-season series 2-2, but their regular-season finale, won by the Hawks, was played primarily by the teams' backup players, so it really did not contribute much information about their head-to-head matchups.

This is Orlando's first time in the Play-in round.

"You have to approach it like a championship game," Magic forward Paolo Banchero said after Tuesday's shootaround. "It's not a series or anything so you have to be ready to go from the tip."

He said he is expecting a tough game because their previous matchups have been close.

The Magic are led by Banchero, who has averaged 25.9 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists this season, and Franz Wagner, averaging 24.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists. Both players missed significant parts of the season with oblique injuries.

The Hawks' top performer is point guard Trae Young, who averaged 24.2 points, 3.1 rebounds and 11.6 assists in the regular season.

Banchero, Orlando's top scorer, plays a power game, while Young makes Atlanta's offense go with scoring bursts from behind the 3-point line and by getting his teammates easy baskets. Young loves the big stage.

"He's going to find a way to score," Magic coach Jamahl Mosley said. "You can draw up all the plays you want, but he's just a great player."

Any of those players, including Wagner, can take over a game. Hawks defensive standout and steals leader Dyson Daniels locks down the top scorers throughout the NBA.

The outcome is likely to come down to which team's style wins out and which team wins the turnover battle. The Magic finished the season with the league's No. 2 defensive rating, but they are No. 27 in offensive efficiency. Overall, they play at a slower pace and are ranked last in terms of 3-point shooting at 31.8%. The Hawks' defense is ranked 18th, but their offense is ranked 17th and they are 18th in 3-point shooting at 35.8%.

Overall, the Magic are shooting 44.5% from the field this season, 3.7% lower than the 48.2% the Hawks allow to opponents. The Hawks average 13.5 made 3-pointers per game this season, 2.1 more made shots on average than the 11.4 per game the Magic give up.

After advancing to the playoffs as the No. 5 seeded team in last season's playoffs and pushing the Cleveland Cavaliers to seven games in the first round, Orlando's season did not meet the team's own goal of winning home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. Injuries to Banchero, Franz Wagner, point guard Jalen Suggs and center/power forward Moe Wagner cost them significant parts of the season and made winning a challenge, and Suggs and Moe Wagner will be out until next season.

Tickets remain available for the game and can be purchased online, by calling 407-896-2442 and at the Kia Center box office on Church Street.

Fans traveling downtown for the game can take SunRail for free when they show their printed or digital game ticket to SunRail conductors. An additional southbound train departing Church Street Station at 11:06 p.m. will be provided courtesy of the Magic. View the full SunRail schedule.
