MELBOURNE, Fla. — One person was killed and a Brevard County Sheriff's deputy was injured when a Monday afternoon traffic stop erupted with gunfire, officials said.

The incident started just after 1 p.m. in the area of U.S. 192 and Interstate 95, when a vehicle was pulled over, Brevard County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Mike DeMorat said.

Two deputies were on the scene when an occupant in the vehicle opened fire, he said.

During the confrontation, the alleged shooter was killed and one of the deputies was injured, DeMorat said, adding that the deputies injuries were not life threatening.

According to the Brevard County Sheriff's Office, the deputy, who was not named, was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne for treatment.

After the shooting, U.S. 192 was closed in both directions between I-95 and St. John's Heritage Parkway, along with the southbound I-95 exit onto U.S. 192. By 4:45 p.m., one lane of eastbound U.S. 192 had reopened from St. John's Heritage Parkway to I-95.

Drivers are urged to find alternate routes through the area.

No other suspect was being sought by investigators and there was no ongoing danger to the community in connection with the shooting, DeMorat said.

No other information was immediately released.

This is a developing story and more information will be posted as it becomes available.
