ORLANDO, Fla. – At 59, Don Muchow is the first person to run from Disneyland in California to Disney World in Florida.

What You Need To Know

  • Don Muchow, 59, wanted to raise awareness about Type 1 diabetes

  • Muchow, who is from Texas, also has Type 1 diabetes

Muchow, a Texas resident, completed his 2,761-mile cross-country journey last Monday, when he arrived at the Magic Kingdom.

As Muchow crossed the finish line, he was met by Disney cast members who cheered him on. He then celebrated with a brief visit inside the theme park—eating a Mickey Mouse ice cream bar and riding his favorite attraction, it’s a small world.

Muchow, who has Type 1 diabetes, called the experience “surreal.”

The ultrarunner began his journey in February 2020, logging about 30 miles a day. But on March 23, after 51 days on the road, he decided to pause his run as the COVID-19 pandemic hit the U.S.  Eventually, Murchow was able to resume his run in September.

Murchow’s resort-to-resort run was part of a Run Across America effort to raise awareness about Type 1 diabetes, a disease he was diagnosed with in 1972. But his trip to Disney World wasn’t the final stop. A couple of days later, Murchow completed his run, reaching the Atlantic Ocean.
