SANFORD, Fla. — Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens welcomed the arrival of a baby blue duiker, officials with the zoo announced Thursday.

The new addition was born at the zoo in February, officials said. Zookeepers have been closely monitoring the baby male to ensure its health and safety.

Blue duikers are the second smallest antelope species in the world. According to zoo officials, blue duikers grow to be 14 inches tall and weigh between 7 to 10 pounds on average. Blue duikers are found in dense forests in Central Africa. They eat vegetation and fruit found in their native habitat. Their life expectancy can be as high as 20 years, zoo officials said.

Zookeepers said guests will have the opportunity to observe the baby blue duiker interacting with his surroundings as he grows stronger and more independent.
