ORLANDO, Fla. — Orange County leaders will address the affordable housing crisis at a public hearing on Tuesday.

What You Need To Know

County commissioners will discuss the county’s next Affordable Housing Trust Fund plan, which helps pay for affordable housing options. The Board of County Commissioners will hold this public hearing at 2 p.m.

Orlando is experiencing one of the country’s worst affordable housing shortages this year. The Affordable Housing Trust Fund plan is designed to address the issue. The project is a projected $50 million to help incentivize builders to create more affordable housing.

This is just one of many steps county commissioners are taking to address the growing crisis. Last year, commissioners selected four housing firms to build projects for 525 housing units in Pine Hills, Apopka, and Orlando by 2023.

Orange County commissioners also voted last month to extend the county’s rental assistance program.

“Going forward, this program, this assistance we’ll be providing will work to keep people in their homes and not create the situation where more people will become homeless,” Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings said.

Orange County commissioners are also taking new steps to address rising rent costs.

They voted to place a rent control measure on the ballot in the general election during November. However, that measure is seeing pushback from realtors and landlords, some of whom have filed a lawsuit to block it.
