ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A West Orange County homeowners association board member says drivers have repeatedly hit a power pole near their community, knocking out power for hours.
Lake Olympia Club Homeowners Association Lamar Powers says the crashes also are dangerous so more needs to be done to improve safety.
What You Need To Know
- Drivers heading west on Silver Star Road continue to hit a pole at Silver Crest Boulevard
- The crashes knock out power to residents of a community across the street
- Lake Olynpia Club Homeowners Association board member Lamar Powers said the community had no power for nine hours once
- FDOT is reviewing the area, but Duke Energy says it would take months to move the pole
The issue for Powers is across Silver Star Road from his community.
“A car ran into this telephone pole, and our power was off for nine hours,” Powers says.
Vehicles have hit this same pole at least four other times in the 20 years Powers has lived in the community, and power has been knocked out each time, he said.
“it’s inconvenient for the people that live here,” Powers said. “Some people work from home. And more importantly, it’s dangerous.”
The crashes occur when drivers are traveling westbound on Silver Star Road at Silver Crest Boulevard.
“People in this right-hand lane are supposed to turn right, but some people don’t make the right-hand turn, and they run into the telephone pole right in front of us,” Power said.
It’s a straight shot from the turn lane into the power pole if drivers do not turn.
Some warning signs were installed, but Powers says he wants more.
A Florida Department of Transportation spokesperson says FDOT is aware of the concerns and is reviewing the area.
Powers wrote a letter to Duke Energy, asking for the pole to be moved.
A Duke spokesperson says removing the pole would require working with other utility providers, plus local and state permits, so it would take months to move the pole.
Powers is not giving up, though.
“I work harder now than before I retired,” he says.
