A vote approving a new operating permit for the controversial Seneca Meadows landfill has been deemed invalid.

Seneca Falls Town Clerk Melissa Brown says the vote for the permit was invalidated after it was found the town board failed to properly introduce or second resolutions relating to the permit.

The permit would have allowed the state's largest landfill to operate past this year's deadline.

Seneca Meadows landfill is currently at capacity.

It's waiting on the state Department of Environmental Conservation to decide on a proposed expansion that would allow the company to operate through 2040 and expand by more than 40 acres.

Some community members and environmental advocates are opposing the expansion, citing potential health concerns. Seneca Meadows has called allegations of harmful health effects false.

The next town board meeting is April 1.
