CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Fewer people are getting cancer screenings and that troubles oncologists.

A medical records vendor report shows the number of preventive screenings dropped more than 86 percent from March to April. Dr. Justin Favaro, the president of Oncology Specialists of Charlotte, worries if patients delay screenings and check-ups, they risk missing cancer in its early stages.

"We know that coronavirus is a very deadly virus and a tremendous number of people die from that in this country, but if you look at the numbers of people who die from cancer and heart disease, those are very significant as well. We don’t want to see a spike in that," Dr. Justin Favaro said.

Some facilities are postponing cancer screenings during the pandemic, but Dr. Favaro says if you're concerned, you can demand a check.
