On March 8, 2017, Jefferson Community College (JCC) and community partners came together to celebrate the opening of the new Health & Wellness Center on campus. Designed to provide privacy and convenient access, the 2,000 square foot building offers health services and non-profit resources to meet the demands of evolving student needs.

The Health & Wellness Center was made possible with capital support from the Jefferson Community College Foundation and leveraged State University of New York (SUNY) Community Schools Grant funding. In addition to supporting the Health & Wellness Center, the $500,000 Community School Grant (spread over the course of three years) made provision for the development of Jefferson Community School (JCS).

With the purpose to expand existing health services, proffer new ones, and collaborate with community organizations as needed, JCS provides an array of services to students to eliminate non-academic barriers and increase achievement. For instance, emergency daycare and transportation, tax preparation, personal counseling and more.

“Receiving the Community College Community School Grant from the State of New York has enabled Jefferson to dedicate much-needed health and wellness resources to the students we serve,” says Dr. Carole A. McCoy, president of Jefferson Community College.  “The community partners are instrumental in delivering many of these resources and services – we could not be successful without the wonderful partners we have. The new building provides private and important space for students, partners and staff to interact cohesively.”

“Our JCC Foundation is thrilled to be able to see this important initiative come to fruition,” says Greg J. Griffin, executive director of the Jefferson Community College Foundation. Our campus community is a reflection of our region, and to be able to provide our diverse student population all of these services in a single, secluded environment will only enhance the comprehensive experience that they will receive while at Jefferson.”

JCS community partners include ACR Health, City of Watertown, Community Action Planning Council, Credo Community Center, Department of Social Services, Fort Drum Regional Health Planning Organization, JCC Student Government, North Country Prenatal/Perinatal Council, PIVOT, Planned Parenthood of the North Country NY, the Treehouse Hourly Drop in Center, Volunteer Transportation Center, Watertown Urban Mission, and Watertown Vet Center.

A few services and resources available at the JCC Health & Wellness Center, located on the south side of campus between the McVean Student Center and Dulles building, include access to the College’s nurses, physician assistant, lactation room, food pantry, health insurance navigators, personal counseling and so much more.
