April has arrived, and that means many school districts around New York state have either started their spring breaks or are getting ready for them.

It may feel a bit early this year for some, so if it snuck up on you and you need something to do with the kids, you may be in luck.

Rachel Laber Pulvino from Visit Rochester shares some ideas on activities in the Finger Lakes region and throughout the state that are only a day trip away.

“If you’re looking to get outside, head towards the water,” Pulvino said. “Whether you’re checking out the waterfalls in Ithaca or Seneca Lake in Watkins Glen, or exploring the Ithaca Children’s Garden, there are so many ways to get outside.”

Pulvino says the Owego Riverwalk is another hidden gem in the region.

In the Southern Tier, Pulvino says the Corning Museum of Glass is another must-visit. Cortland’s Greek Peak Mountain Resort’s adventure center is also open now, and there are stay-and-play packages available for families

For those looking for inside activities, Pulvino recommends the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester.

“There is nothing else like the Strong Museum in the world,” she said. “And we’re so lucky that it’s located right here in the Finger Lakes.”

It includes the world’s largest collection of toys, dolls and games in the National Toy Hall of Fame.

The Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science and Technology (MOST) and the Rosamond Gifford Zoo are also options for those living in or traveling to Syracuse.

The Women's Rights National Historical Park and the National Women's Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls and the National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House in Rochester are all options for those interested in learning more about the region’s role in women’s rights.

The Glenn H. Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport shares the history of early aviation and the region.
