GREENSBORO, N.C. – Because of the pandemic, the Greensboro Ballet made the decision to move its annual "The Nutcracker" performance to a drive-in.

"It is so important to the kids to be able to do this every year. This is their Christmas. This is as important as the actual holiday season itself," Interim Artistic Director Jessica McAlister said.

The ballet rehearsed in socially distant studios and danced outside at LeBauer Park when the practice required larger groups. Dancers wore masks at all times.

Once rehearsals wrapped, the ballet performed scenes separately at the Carolina Theatre. Local filmmaker Paul Byun filmed the scenes and edited it together.

The ballet schedule performances to air in a drive-in at the Greensboro Coliseum between December 18 and 20. Tickets can be purchased online. McAlister said they are $60 per vehicle.

Dancer Ashlynn Sheffield said it was crucial they still got to perform this year.

"It's a special time of year because it's like a tradition and we always do it every year, and it's like being part of a family. So, it's really special when you go out and you hear the music, and you think of the dances that we do all the time," she said.
