National Grid is reminding residents to keep safe ahead of the weekend storm. Customers generally focus on power outages during storms, but the company also warns about gas hazards.

Snow accumulations can affect gas and electric equipment in homes.

The buildup of snow on gas meters, pipes and regulators can pose serious risks.

If ice or snow falls on equipment it can lead to gas leaks, which can be even more dangerous than an outage.

"One of the things about this storm is that, and that can be a dangerous situation as well," said Spokesperson for the National Grid Patrick Stella.

National grid also recommends never piling snow around vents. A blocked vent can lead to the buildup of carbon monoxide.

If you suspect gas leaks around your home, National Grid says leave immediately and call their emergency number.
