Two people are dead following snowmobile crashes in Herkimer County.

The first happened on Morrow Point Road in the town of Webb just after midnight on Sunday. Police say Michelle Wander, 46 of Liverpool, was traveling at an unsafe speed in a heavily wooded area when she locked her brakes, hit a tree and was ejected. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Wander was snowmobiling with her husband at the time of the accident.

Later, police say 72-year-old Larry DeMarte mishandled a curve and crashed into a steep ravine and creek on the Webb Trail System around 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

They say his snowmobile rolled on top of him while he was underwater. People who were riding with DeMarte gave him CPR, but were unable to revive him.

Investigators say speed was a factor in the accident, but it remains under investigation.
