HERKIMER, N.Y. -- Work is underway on a new jail in Herkimer County.

It’s a controversial project that’s been in the making for more than a decade. The controversy isn't so much with the project itself, but its location.

It's being built at the former P&C lot off Route 28 in the Village of Herkimer.

The new work comes after years of legal battles over where the jail should be located.

It's expected to cost more than $20 million, but officials have said property taxes could go down once it's in use.

Spectrum News reached out to Herkimer County Legislature Chairman Bernard Peplinski.

He said an official groundbreaking date has not been announced yet, because there have been some setbacks at the site.

The project is expected to be complete by the summer of 2020.
