Many of us have put our phone numbers on "Do Not Call Registries," but scammers have found ways to reach people anyway.

State Senator Chris Jacobs says they employ a tactic called "neighborhood spoofs," where they use local area codes to trick people into picking up.

Jacobs is sponsoring legislation that would allow telecommunications companies to block fraudulent calls before they reach your phone.

He says it's important to target this issue because the percentage of scam calls on U.S. cell phones went from 3.7 percent to 29.2 percent in the last year, and is predicted to rise to 44.6 percent next year.

"At the rate we are going, soon one out of every two calls you will receive on your cell phone will be an automated phone call with a pre-recorded message,” he said.

Jacobs will officially introduce the bill in the new legislative session in January.
