Another election night is in the books and a couple cities will swear-in new mayors next year. But we begin in Newburgh where Mayor Judy Kennedy wins reelection as an independent, defeating Jonathan Jacobson and John Guidice. Briggette Sayegh has more on her unique road to reelection.

NEWBURGH, N.Y. -- She came back from one defeat, to notch a historic victory. After a hard fought battle, Judy Kennedy will serve a second-term as the mayor of the city of Newburgh.

"I am exuberant, I am relieved and I am so proud of a team a whole city of people that care about their city so much," Kennedy said.

Speaking to supporters Tuesday night -- Kennedy said the win was not hers alone, but a community wide effort.

"We came together in a way that we've never worked before. More than one miracle has happened here tonight," said Kennedy.

Kennedy says she is the first candidate to win on a third party line in the city's history. After losing the Democratic Party ticket to Jonathan Jacobson in the primary she pursued a run on the Independence line. A decision she now celebrates.

"It's absolutely only through working together -- partnership and collaboration. We've just demonstrated that point here by winning this election," Kennedy said.

Kennedy says there's a lot of work to be done to make the city a more attractive place for investors and jobs. And with the election in the rear view, she says she's ready to focus on what matters.
