This weekend on In Focus, we're taking a closer look at the impact of problem gambling across New York state. According to a survey conducted earlier this year by the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports, more than 65% of people reported experiencing consequences from gambling. That indicates that they are experiencing gambling harms or disorders. It also reported a higher prevalence of gambling harms happen among low income, unemployed and minority populations. Currently, there is no source of federal funding or federal oversight for services to address gambling harms and gambling disorder at the state level.
JoDee Kenney spoke with Congressman Paul Tonko about the Safe Bet Act, which he says puts safeguards in place for gambling. He calls sports gambling a known addictive product and can be dealt with as a public health issue. Tonko says the act focuses on affordability, marketing, and AI. He says this doesn't deny gambling, but it makes the addictive product safer. Currently, bonuses and boosters target the person and feed the frenzy and chase the losses syndrome. Microgames are about an opportunity to bet despite not knowing what the odds are, even though through artificial intelligence, the house knows the odds.
