William Wood Jr., who stands accused of killing two former co-workers in an after-hours robbery at a Chili's in DeWitt, was determined competent to stand trial following a mental evaluation.

The trial date is set for June 17, 2019 should the federal government not decide to get involved. Earlier this week, it was revealed that federal charges could be filed, which could bring the death penalty into play.

"New York State does not have the death penalty so as you said, that's only federal jurisdiction, so I'm still proceeding as if the feds aren't involved," said Chief Assistant District Attorney Melinda McGunnigle. "The judge already gave us a trial date, and we're going through the motions."

Steve Gudknecht and Kris Hicks were both shot and killed inside the Erie Boulevard East restaurant in September, and police said Wood intended to kill the two people who survived, but his gun jammed. Police also said his motive appeared to be robbery.

Wood was placed in solitary confinement shortly after his arrest. Prosecutors say he was placed there for assaulting a deputy while behind bars.

Five people total are charged, including an alleged getaway driver, someone who was in the vehicle, and two people associated with the gun.
