Wayne Central senior Raina Hoffmann is one of the top girls golfers in Section V.

She credits her success in part to taking the game up at a young age.

"My dad got me into it. I started when I was a little girl, when I had plastic clubs and I started playing in tournaments about five years ago," said Hoffmann. "I've played school golf for six years; two on JV and this is my fourth year on varsity."

Wayne doesn't have a girls’ team, so she could have joined a girls squad in a different district. However, Hoffmann decided to tee it up with the boy’s team.

"There is a big difference," said Hoffmann. "It's mostly the length of the courses. I get to experience playing the longer tees and for college golf, that's pretty important, playing longer tees and harder courses."

This week, Hoffmann is competing in the girls sectional tournament.

“It's kind of easy going back and forth," she said. "Playing different distances is a little hard, but playing tournament golf is kind of the same experience as school competition."
