Rush-Henrietta grad Steven Zarzycki had a tough junior season at Kean University. The outside hitter battled injuries leaving him sidelined for a large part of the season. But treatment for those injuries brought to light something much more serious.

A lower back MRI revealed a mass. A biopsy revealed that the mass was cancer. Zarzycki was diagnosed with Burkitt's Lymphoma, a rare type of cancer, typically affecting younger people.

"It is very aggressive, which is kinda scary to hear but then they’re treating it very aggressively," said Zarzycki.

The rising senior is set to complete treatments in October and the plan is to return in time for his final season of college volleyball. In the meantime, he has a lot of people in his corner.

"I know it happened to me for a reason because I have the strong support of family and friends," said Zarzycki. "Not a lot of people could get through this but I know I’ll be able to."
