Rochester police have released body cam footage from an incident where an officer shot a suspect on Monday night.
After responding to a shotspotter alert on 7th Street, police say they pursued a vehicle before it crashed into a pole on 1st Street. When the driver allegedly fled on foot, the RPD says an officer ran after him and then lost sight of the man in an unlit backyard. That's when investigators say the officer was ambushed and tackled to the ground, resulting in a fight between the two.
Rochester Police Chief David Smith says the officer had drawn his taser, but he says when the scuffle happened, the taser went off and burned the officer. The two then allegedly fought over the officer's handgun. Police say the officer fired off five shots with one hitting the suspect in the jaw.
The RPD chief says there is no ambient lighting in the backyard where the incident happened.
"Close your eyes for a second, think about pitch black, now picture yourself with your eyes closed laying on your back, fighting for your life for a handgun with someone on top of you," said Smith.
The suspect is in stable condition with injuries that are not life-threatening, police say.
The four-year veteran officer, whose name will be released at a later time, was treated for a concussion, taser burns and bruising.
During the investigation, officers say they found evidence of shots fired at the initial scene and video surveillance of the suspect shooting a gun and fleeing the area.
The RPD is working with the DA's office to determine charges.
