ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is now out of the free steering locks they were providing to owners of Hyundai vehicles in the wake of a string of thefts.
The MCSO says it is working to get more in stock.
Dozens of locks were donated to the sheriff's office by Hyundai and were available at all of the agency's substations.
Deputies say more than 400 Hyundais and Kias have been reported stolen in Monroe County since October 2022.
The sheriff's office says locks for Kia vehicles will be available at a future date.
Across the country, thieves have been targeting specific models of Hyundais and Kias by making makeshift keys. The vehicles being targeted include Hyundais made between 2016-2021 and Kias made between 2011-2021, without push-button starts.
A trend has been going around TikTok specifically, making it a contest to see who can steal one of those brands of cars.
