ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Hours after Rochester's mayor offered an update on the city's gun violence state of emergency, police say someone shot and killed another young person. It's the 48th homicide in Rochester this year.

The RPD says it happened on Roycroft Drive around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, right in the middle of the neighborhood where Mayor Malik Evans says a lot of the deadly violence happens. Police identified the victim as Kenneth Johnson, 26.

The latest shooting marks the third homicide in three days. According to investigators, 16-year-old Jaquise Davis was killed Monday night on Pennsylvania Avenue. Michael Nairy, 68, was stabbed to death at the House of Mercy on Sunday.

An RPD command post near the city's International Market is up and running with increased foot patrols in the Clinton Avenue and Marketview Heights neighborhoods.

Police Chief David Smith reports more than half the 48 homicide cases this year have been closed, with several leads into the other killings.

The mayor is emphasizing prevention as an equal response to intervention in the effort to suppress gun violence.

"We have to intervene in their lives sooner than later and make sure that they don't make a mistake that they can't take back," said Mayor Evans. "Because the ripple effect that we are seeing on this violence is that it doesn't just affect the family, but it affects the entire community. It puts a stain on the entire community whenever we see this blood that is being shed."

The mayor's initial 30-day state of emergency declaration is expected to be extended later this month.

Families and neighbors enduring this emergency may be able to find help at an event scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. The RPD, Ibero-American Action League and Pathstone are offering services and resources to citizens at The International Plaza on North Clinton Avenue from 3-7 p.m.
