ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The violence on the streets of Rochester continues as homicides reached 31 so far this year, according to police.

Investigators say two people killed over the weekend are part of that total.

Authorities say 17-year-old Jeremiah Baker was shot while riding his bike near the basketball court at the Harriet Tubman Estates on William Warfield Drive around 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

He was taken to URMC where he was pronounced dead.

Police say Baker lived in the estates and was the intended target of the shooting. Baker was a Rochester City School District student.

Superintendent Dr. Lesli Myers-Small says the district has lost two students to gun violence in fewer than two weeks. Authorities say a 16-year-old girl died after being struck by a stray bullet on June 4. She was attending a friend's birthday party on Emerson Street.

Myers-Small released a statement saying in part:

"I am absolutely distressed, hurt, and angry. We mourn at a time when our scholars should be celebrating proms, graduations, and plans for summer vacation. Again, we must come together as a community to protect our children from these senseless acts that take them from us far too soon."

No arrests have been made in connection with Baker's death, authorities say.

On Saturday, police also say Yasier Clark was shot on East Avenue and Lawrence Street around 1 a.m. Investigators believe he was involved in an argument before shots were fired.

The RPD says they are working to crack down on the violence.

"Every time we have one of these incidents, especially at a spot we have so many officers there, we're looking to improve and see how we can make this a safer environment for everybody involved," said Sgt. Greg Bello of the Rochester Police Department. "Because we want people to be able to come out to the entertainment district, come out to downtown at night and enjoy themselves. Things like this shatter that trust, but we're working...we're going to continue to work."
