ROCHESTER, N.Y. — With the weather warming up, that means more all-terrain vehicles will be out on city and county streets.
Rochester Mayor Malik Evans says his office is already getting calls about an increase in illegal ATV use.
Last year, the city and Monroe County increased punishment for use of dirt bikes and four-wheelers on streets, including fines and outright seizure of the vehicle.
Evans says the problem will remain a priority this year, as the city tries to avoid the tragedies that took that happened last summer.
"The problem is you can have all the freedom you want, but when your freedom interferes with young people and old people, then the mayor has a problem with it,” Evans said. “What we’re seeing now, and we saw this last year, is there was a homicide because of one of these four-wheelers. Somebody was riding a four-wheeler, they almost hit somebody’s kid. And the person pulled out a gun, they pulled out a gun, and one of the persons ended up dead. Last year, a 9-year-old died because they fell off of one of these all-terrain vehicles. So what we're saying is you will see enforcement."
Evans also spoke about the city's search for a new police chief.
He says the city has a group of core candidates and will soon narrow down the search.
