GATES, N.Y. — Gates is the latest town to decide its rules on cannabis. The town will opt out of recreational marijuana sales once it's allowed in New York.

Local governments can pass their own rules on marijuana use or ban retail dispensaries and cannabis lounges. Those options must be written into law by December 31.

Irondequoit will host a public hearing on the issue next week after a town board member proposed opting out. It'll be held at Irondequoit Town Hall on Tuesday, November 9 at 7:35 p.m.

Meanwhile, Pittsford is considering a public referendum to let voters decide.
